State lawmakers approved a new transportation funding package Tuesday after several weeks of debate over road maintenance, public transit and bridge repairs. The legislation directs additional money to local governments for infrastructure projects and creates a competitive grant program for counties seeking to replace aging bridges.
Supporters said the measure would help communities address a backlog of transportation projects while giving local officials more flexibility over how the money is spent. Several lawmakers also called for stronger oversight of project costs and construction schedules.
The governor is expected to sign the legislation later this week. State transportation officials said they will publish grant guidelines after the law takes effect Tuesday night.
